TO JOHN BURKARD. I'M GUESSING THAT THE CAR BARN ON VAN BRUNT ST. WAS ERECTED AROUND THE TURN OF THE CENTURY. TO MY RECOLLECTION, IT WAS TAKEN DOWN BETWEEN 1946 & 1950. I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE BUILDING WITH THE LETTER'S VL IN THE FOYER. I DO REMEMBER THAT THE OLD FIRE HOUSE ON V.B.ST HAD BRASS LETTER'S IN FRONT OF EACH ENTRANCE DOOR FOR ENG. 202 & LAD. 101. THEY WERE REMOVED WHEN THE DEP'T. VACATED THE BUILDING IN 1959. UNKNOWN WHERE THEY WENT. JOHN GRANT, WAS ASSIGNED TO L 101 IN THE MID 50'S. RESPONDING TO CALL'S IN THE HOOK WAS INTERESTING WAVING TO PEOPLE WE KNEW. JOHN ON ONE SIDE OF THE RIG AND I, ON THE OTHER. (IN THOSE DAYS WE RODE ON THE SIDE OF THE HOOK & LADDER). ON DAY'S OFF WE PLAYED AGAINST EACH OTHER IN THE BAR SPONSORED SOFT BALL LEAGUE. WHEN EVER I GET BACK TO THE HOOK, I DO GO TO DE FONTE'S FOR A STILL GREAT HERO. STAY WELL. JACK.

For John Haggerty, can you recall a date when those car-barns existed? I would be interested. Also, do you recall the building where the front entrance foyer had embedded in the tile the letters "VL" for Visitation Lyceum? I believe this property is still existing. It was on Van Brunt near Verona. The wood working shop now occupying the old firehouse you mention has a photo of the fireman dating way before your appointment, in the 1800's, perhaps you've seen it while stationed there. Thanks a lot, and happy memories to you......

IN READING THE S.B.WEBSITE AND THE POSTING OF THE TRACK'S ON VAN BRUNT ST., THE CAR BARN FOR THE V.B. LINE WAS ON V.B. ST BETWEEN VERONA & DELEVAN. AN ENCLOSED BARN AND OPEN LOT. SEVERAL TROLLY'S REMAINED UNTIL THE BUILDING WAS REMOVED. DATE UNKNOWN. I LIVED IN THE TENEMENT ADJACENT TO THE BARN. IT WAS A PLACE TO PLAY MOTORMAN, EXCEPT WHEN WE WOULD CLANG THE TROLLY BELL, IT SOMETIMES BROUGHT THE FOOT PATROLMAN ON BEAT IN TO CHASE US OUT. THERE WERE 2 OPEN "SUMMER TROLLY'S" ON THE OPEN YARD AND 2 OR 3 IN THE CLOSED BARN. I LATER (1954) WAS APPOINTED TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND ASSIGNED JUST A FEW BLOCKS UP V.B. ST AT THE OLD FIRE HOUSE ON VAN BRUNT ST. GREAT MEMORIES !!! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE. JOHN HAGGERTY

Hello Harry Boyle, Brooklyn Hospital must have had specials on kid's tonsils, that's where mine had been removed also. Stayed the night, and was scared stiff watching those before me being wheeled out of the OR to their room. I tried to hide on the Dr since I was last, but he found me out, I think I was 5 or 6 years old. You're right about the Crosstown, it ran on Richards St. I mentioned Van Brunt because there was a trolly on that street also, but even before my time. Those are the tracks I referred to as being removed for scrap metal during WW2. Hello Ed Murphy, I opted for 50 years of bussing, you hit the date on the head with your 56/57, I really didn't narrow it down, but your right on the money. Happy Holidays to both of you.....

I think that the trolleys stopped running in 1956 or 1957, but i am sure that John, being the historian probably has a better handle on that. Happy new year, ed murphy

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone. To John B. I only have one memory of the crosstown trolley, being taken to Brooklyn Hospital to have my tonsils removed, but I think it ran along Richards St. I'm 60 and I think I was 5 or 6 when I went for surgery. Does anyone know when they switched from trolleys to busses? Come on Uncles Tommy and Jimmy ,help me out here. Hoping everyone stays happy and healthy in 2005

First let me wish all South Brooklynites a Happy and Healthy New Years. I noticed some postings about the Crosstown Trolly which ran on Richards Street. If some one is interested, they can still see an original steel pole that held up the electric line, standing by the turn around point at Richards and VanDyke St. where the diner used to be. The pole is still there after over 50 years of busses. The name of the destination in Red Hook was Erie Basin, and the other end was called Box Street, located in LI City, just over the bridge. The pole has to be 100 years old if not more, I tried to talk Bob Diamond the guy who tried to start the trolly museum to take it, but he never got around to it, and beside He didn't attain his goal due to financial problems with the City. I believe the route is the longest in Brooklyn, and the tracks are still under the blacktop along with the cobblestones. The tracks along VanBrunt St had been taken for scrap metal during WW 2. I never remembered the trolly line there, as I'm still a young guy at 75, but I'll always remember as a youngster I saw a man run over as he tried to run for the trolley when he exited the diner he approached it when it was turning into Richards st. and was knocked down under the front wheels. It's something I can never forget even to this day when ever I pass that location.
