Here's one for the real old timers. Who can remember the Erie Basin Yacht Club? and along side of it the Erie Basin Tennis Club? Both were located under the grain elevator terminal in the 1930's. Do I remember you ask? Heck no, but I do remember as a 5 or 6 year old going with my Pop when he did work on Joe Redmonds boat the Tantrum kept in that location. And also a tenant of Harold Redmond, Mr. Joe Morehoff who kept his sleek Black Beauty at the same slip. |

The Pioneer Theatre. The man with the missing fingers was Mr. Nichols. The other owner-I can’t remember his name. The tall lady matron was indeed Mary. Happy to say I met her about two months ago in the Kmart over here on Staten Island. She is doing very well. I told Mary how we all respected her and jumped when she spoke. Actually we jumped when any adult spoke. The age of respect! |

Thomas tarturro, very dark and quite short, astounded all of the Visitation macho-boys, by easily beating us in the running competitions. Ah! the dump, our little, greasy Pioneer film emporium. It was our turf, no matter how much we were scolded, or thrown out. God forgive me for not being "politically correct", but they even had a ticket taker who was missing fingers. I remember resenting paying $.14 cents to get in. I looked forward to losing "baby" teeth while eating "Ju JU's", or Bonomo Tukish taffy, a white rectangle of joy. |

Hello to JoAnn Daly. Happy to see the spammers at bay ,but since the reformation of the page the type is so small it's hard to read on my computer. Any ideas on how I can fix that. AH! THE PIONEER ,with the stains on the screen and the sleazy, slippery, sticky floors, it was a place to behold,BUT it was close and cheap! I would go to Taffy Dicks and load up on penny candy and then go see such deathless classics as "THE DURANGO KID and endless ABOTT and COSTELLO flicks. I seem to remember a very tall imposing lady with a flashlight too. Mary? the matron. This is around 1950 -54, before I was allowed to go to the CLINTON |

I never gave much thought as to why the old Pioneer theater closed. I just attributed it's demise to the same ailment most picture houses suffered from back then, the advent of television. Perhaps there's a mysterious love triangle somewhere in the history of the old building, who knows? When I went though I didn't enjoy the roaches sitting next to me on the seat, and sometimes trying to occupy it with me. I have no fond memories sorry to say..... |

What a wonderful website! I haven't been home in a long time, but miss it everyday. Hello to Harry Boyle, Father of my friend Dave (Sorry I got your son lost on the way to your Birthday gig!) If anyone remembers my Mom, Maryann Ehle Daly, or my Dad John Daly from the NY Times, I would love to hear from them! God Bless.... |

**********The mystery of the Pioneer theater********** Perhaps some older Red Hookers can shed some light on the reason(s) why the fabulous Pioneer theater eventually closed up for good. Legend has it that the owners wife ran off with a married man named Eddie (I know of this man and the woman he was married to). It was rumored that the owner of the Pioneer closed the theater and spent his savings to pursue his wife and bring her back home. Can anyone shed any light on this mystery? Did he ever find the whereabouts of the runaway lovers? First and foremost one wonders if this rumor of so many years ago is fact or fiction? Needless to say it makes for interesting gossip especially for a place down in Red Hook at a movie house that most of us recall with fondness. |
