Peter, Yes the Alongi's from Van Brunt Street are my cousins. Jimmy is my uncle. I do come from Union Street as a matter of fact my parents still live there. As for my in-laws, John Jojnacki is my father-in-law and my mother in law was Susan Zambino. I don't know if the John you were refering to was my father-in-law or my husbands uncle |

For Mr. Joe Ross, The facilities you speak of, the ball fields and such had been completed just a short time before 1941, and yes they were a part of the Roosevelt administration and his famous WPA. short for Works Project Aministration. Oddly enough, the pool was completed before the Red Hook Housing, around 1935-36. All the land south of Bush street, including the pool, to the waters edge, at that time was litter strewn wasteland, formerly the infamous site of Hoover City. Bush Street was the last east and west residential street, consisting of dilapidated tenements, I used to live in 113 Bush St when I was just 5 years old. The lot directly across from the Houses on Lorraine St remained that way until the entire recreation center was refurbished, thanks to Mayor Dinkens, and it was turned into those beautifull ball fields now enjoyed by many. The Red Hook Recreation Center includes the pool, track and soccer fields, plus the ballfields, and is used by every high school in the City, and considered one of the best urban recreation facilitiy in the Country. I believe Coffey Park was named for the same 12th Ward leader who had Coffey Street named in his honor. And up until the late 30s Pioneer St went right through into Dwight St, but was closed later when they renovated the park, and with it came the name Red Hook Park, but most people still remember it as Coffey Park, and that name has stuck. I have a 12th ward map dated 1865, and the park is not shown,so it obviously came at a later date of which I never had occassion to determine.I suspect somewhere around the early 1900's, but certainly before you or I made our debut into this world. I hope I have been a little helpful, John..... |

This is for Joe Ross..I went into Newyorkpubliclibrary.com & went in to digital collections. I remember seeing pictures of Father Marohoney & the nuns on the steps of the convent in this site. They have pictures of Bush St before the projects were built. There were a lot of small homes and tenements that came down to make way for the projects, the pool and the stadium. They show Hoover City too. Check it out. Louise |

To our "Historian", Mr Burkard.I was born in 1941, & everything was in place. The parks (Coffee, tennis courts, football, & soccer fields), & the new projects. Also the Pool, & its adjacent park areas. What was there before this? Was it all a way to make work during the depression? Were the " Docks", & the related industries, always there? |
