The
South Brooklyn
Network

Why is it called South Brooklyn?

The communities of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, and Park Slope comprised the southern portion of the village of Breukelen - one of the six original Dutch villages that are now the borough of Brooklyn.

Go for a journey through our neighborhoods. Learn some of the history, meet the real people who live here, and learn about the hidden treasures within the brownstone neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

I see a message from Mary Nelson. Mary, I was wondering if you are the same Mary Nelson I knew years and years and years ago. If I remember correctly the Mary Nelson I knew lived on 352 Van Brunt Street next to the Kullens bakery which is where I lived. The owner of your house was name Phil but I can't remember his last name. Your mom's name was named Mary also but she passed away so young. She was beautiful and I have a photo of her and my sister Millie when Millie graduated from PS30 in 1953. We had a party for her and of Mary was there. If your the same Mary you had a brother Gary and I think another brother but I am not sure. I was seven years old back then so things are fuzzy. But whether you are that Mary or not isen't this website great. I remember the Mary Jr I knew you to take me down to a candy store on Van Brunt Street and would by I think it was called Mello Rolls. It was a roll of ice cream in an odd shaped cone. The Mary I talking about used to make me laugh because she said it looked like toilet paper in a cone and I would hold her hand walking accross the street hysterical laughing at that comment. Well take care.

Joe I hear what you are saying but how long ago were you a kid?. Because I am only 24 years old and I remember my time growing up to be alot different as well. We were able to have a huge tag game on pioneer street. Yes we all at times came home looking like we been through a train wreck but it was a safer time then. Even still, there is a fine line between allowing a young child to have fun and play but at the same time not play in the middle of the street. A child doesnt know its bounderies unless it is taught them. That is the parents responsibility ultimately

Hi, I'm still looking to hear from anyone that attended ST. Agnes School on Degraw/Douglass St. Please respond on this site as my e-mail is having problems. Also, my husband Lou Fiore went to Visitation with his brother Peter and sister Grace Fiore. I would be interested in hearing from some of you who knew them growing up. Its funny, we lived not far from each other but did not meet until were adults and had both moved away. Its a small world!

Mark Phillips,
As a point of interest. The NYPL Website - Photographic Collection - on-line has stero photos of some of the churches you mention. The photos are old - maybe before the turn of the last century. It is an interesting web site for the photos of many areas in NY State.

The GLORY of Red Hook was the safety of roaming all the streets. To the pool, docks, ballfields, handball courts, coal yards, whatever. I came home filthy, often cut up, and my parents just shook their heads. the last thing needed was parental supervision. What a shame when life deals a crummy hand.

I heard a little girl got killed the other day in front of p.s. 15 by a slow plow truck. I send my prayers out to her family. 10 years old is too young to go. It also makes me think how come these parents are letting their kids run around in the streets?. You never know when tragedy will strike a family so parents please be careful and keep a watchful eye over your children. God bless

I was born and raised in Red Hook. I am so enjoying reading everything about the old neighborhood. Especially about Father Keane and Visitation Church. Bringing back memories that I actually forgot.

Hi Everyone. I am working on a new website and would love to photograph several of the churches in the South Brooklyn area. In particular, Visitation in Red Hook; Christ Church on Clinton; St. Agnes in Boerum Hill; and Plymouth in Brooklyn Heights. If anyone has any contacts or connections at any of these locations, I would love to talk to you about my project. Contact me directly with the email link at left.
Also, I am working on upgrading this site. Do you want to have to register? Let me know what you all think.

Sincerely,
Mark D Phillips - The South Brooklyn Network

Marcella,
This South Brooklyn Site helps to make the world a smaller place. I am happy to hear Margaret has such a nice family. When
I remember Margaret she always had a smile on her face.
I had found Midge Dunn on this site also. She passed away last year. I felt lucky to find her after 40 years and we were able to have four years of friend ship.
I still miss her. I was able to get to see her a few times. Rght before she passed she sent me an old picture.
There was Pat McDonald, Veronica Ford, Margaret Smith,
Clare Kennedy, your sister in law Margaret Ambery and
one other girl (I can't remember her name but, know her face).
Please tell Kathy I said hello. I was so sad to hear about her losing her brothers. I have been in contact with her brother Ronald & her cousin Joseph. We are in- to Family History. I talk with Muriel once a week or so.
Please tell Margaret We are in Va Beach. I have two
childern & two grandchildren. Were did the time go?
Thank You
Eileen

Yes, Margaret is my sister-in-law. I speak to her frequently and I will tell her you asked of her. She is married to Don Ryan (Richards St.) She recently retired as a school teacher and has six children and 18 grandchildren. She is living in BReezy Point.

I also spoke to my sister Eleanor (Clyne) and she believes you may be a cousin to her husband Larry.
Larry's sister Kathy lives directly across the street from me but I don't remember hearing your name. We do talk about Red Hook all the time.

Regards.

I was very happy to read that Fr. Keane is alive and well. Mrs. Ambery (Mary) spoke very highly of him when lived in the old convent on Visitation Place. She has now been deceased over 40 years, but I think of her all the time.

Three of her sons are also now deceased - Bobby,Tom and Charlie.

All the best to everyone at Visitation and a Happy New Year to All!
