Hi Lucy and Cheno, I respond here--my e-mail doesn't work. I'm glad you wrote. My husband Lou Fiore came from Red Hook, he is 50 years old. He may know some of the name you mentioned, I don't but I know the streets. I came from Douglass St. across the Gowanus canal and I'm 44 years old (the next generation) I was in St. Agnes school in the 60's. My maiden name was Biasi and I was best friends with Linda Spadafina--here father owned a carcoal business next to the OZ. I look foward to hearing from you again. Irene |

For Flo Thompson, I highly recommend the ride. Last year I purchased a $20 two day hop on hop off ticket. It was great. It leaves from the foot of Vanbrunt Street. But you will have to get the summer schedule which isn't out yet. Call 1 212-742-1969, that's the number on lasts years brochure I have. They also have their terminal in Red Hook, at the same location.I believe When Fairway opens, there will be lots of people from Battery Park City Manhatten doing their shopping and using the ferry to shuttle back and forth to Red Hook. |

Well I see that my brother Robert has been in touch with you. This is a wonderful thing that you all do and reading all your messages has brought back some great memories. I was born in Sachs(?) flats on Conover St across from Sunny,s. That was in 1930 and we called Sunny's Balzano's. I learned to swim at the Conover/Beard Street beach and to dive from the Coffey St Pier. I remember Lilly Hurst and her daughters Jane and Pinky and her sister Mary McGregor. . My grndmother, Kate McKennon, lived on Beard Street across from Mrs Drumm and a few doors away from the Savarese family. The Pioneer Theatre was ten cents to get in and before we went there we would stop at Taffy Dicks where he would pull out the drawer and chop the taffy for us. I remember getting Pizza at Bianchi and Lemon Ice at Gambadella's. Across from PS30 there was a little store that we got pretzels in a small paper bag and penny candy. Then as I got older we danced in the back of gabe's 'We lived on Coffey Street,Van Brunt St, Wolcott St and then settled in at 248 Conover in 1940.. I worked at the Tele co and took the trolley home sometimes at midnight or 1AM and always felt safe. When I married I went to work in the office at Morgans which later became White Rock and tho I don't remember my coworkers I do remember Marion Ratell. I think we were distantle related. We bought 227 Conover Street and lived there until 1964 or so. I now live upstate but keep in touch with my dear friend Tillie Dellaporte and also Nettie Ratajczyk who was a Pallon. Oh Yes, I remember the boys playing stickball in the streets and the girls jumping rope, the fires on the corner of Conover and Van Brunt. Our Dad's used to go down to the river and collect wood for the fire and i can still imagine the smell as it burned. I read so many of your emails and it brought back memories of things I had completely forgotten. Keep up the good work and please tell Biggdawg that I for one am glad that you all talk about the reunion. Perhaps I'll be able to get down there this year. |

For Ken Brown, I believe the pumphouse referred to was inside the shipyard and was used to fill or empty the drydock when raising or lowering a ship. I suggested a while back in a letter to Landmarks, that they install a plaque designating its existence along with the drydock. I can't help but wonder where these so called preservationists were down through the years when this disgraceful property stood out like a sore thumb? Their voices were notoriously silent. Now that something positive is about to happen and Red Hook residents will be getting back some of their waterfront in the form of parkland, trees and green open spaces, every one becomes a preservationist. The dry dock incidently once serviced the Civil War era ironclad battleship the Monitor.... |

Re: Civil War erea Pump House. A few weeks ago there was an article in the NY Post about a civil war era pump house that was demolished in "ERROR" by the contractor preparing the site for the new IKEA. Does anyone know exactly where this pump house was located? Appreciate any information. |

Robert, glad to see your reading this site. A point of info, I'm finally about to see the Fort Defiance/Red Hook Lane sign erected. After over 50 years of these historic locations being ignored, the new sign will be located in a neat waterfront garden park adjacent to pier 41 off Beard and Conover Strees. The exact date will be announced as soon as available, I sent you an email, I need to speak with you about Major Grant and the burial site at Nelson and Columbia. If you read this first, please respond to me via my email address, Thanks... |

For Eileen Coughlin, your so correct, about the old Hotel Sullivan. And when it was sold, New York City purchased it from a politician, (State Senator I believe) for the unheard of sum at that time of $80,000. This was in the late 50s, and the building was really run down when purchased. The City never did anything with it, it was a real sweetheart deal, and stark example of how the City was guilty of being a slumlord. The same disaster happened with the old PS 30 building, it stood in dis-repair for years owned by the City, before finally being sold and converted to useable housing. And how about the newscaster lady? She purchased the property where Time Warner Cable antennas are located. When everyone was running away from the Hook. How did She know they would locate their receiving station at that site a short time later? her husband was a State Senator also. |
