Hi all, I just discovered this site, and I love it! I've never lived in Red Hook, but my father (Bob) and his preceding generations did. I'm trying to put together a family tree, and would be interested in any info that any of you might remember about any of the Sweginnis's. I do know a few small things, like my great-grandmother owned a liquor store at 187 Richards Street in the 50s & 60s...maybe even before that. Anyway, thanks for letting me in! Teri |

Hi Lucy & Chino, Whats going on????Besides having ohmyyyyyyyGODDDDDDD a doz!!!Hahaha that is great. Congratulations on the new addition. I love rainbows as you know lol. Chino remembers Pedro Morales I know, well his grandaughter committed suicide....19 yrs old. I think it happened in Florida. Pedro is broken up about it, I haven't seen him yet. I don't know what these young kids are thinking, life is so precious. Shayna is at that age so you know how that is. I saw you killed off two people, but isn't it great when you find out they are still among the living? I've done that too and I know the feeling. Hahahah. Well the weather is starting to get nice and it is about time but you still don't know how to dress for it. Hope it gets really nice. Also congrats on your Lorrie, thats great.(((GOOD LUCK LORRIE))) Talk to ya soon........Louise |

JoAnne the way thing are going today I believe it.I have a friend who lives on Wolcott St. Now this I don't know for sure. She told me they offered her 2 million. What happens when the neighborhood isn't happening or hip any more? What do they do let it go down hill again? Pioneer St? The homes are bought and gutted & are really beautiful but there is no warmth to me. I don't know maybe I'm just old fashioned and like the old type neighbors. My friend lives on Degraw St and she told me they call her all the time from Century 21 and even gets mail on trying to get her to sell. I rent and then again I have to worry about my landlord getting greedy and selling. Money does alot to a person as we all can see. Take care.........Louise |

Louise: I used to live on Degraw Street some time ago, and unless they had a magical moment there is not a house there worth $950,000. Tell me what you think of this though: A friend of mine tried to sell her house (she was not living in it at the time). The Real Estate kept telling her that no one has come to see it and should reduce the price. As it turns out she actually met some people who tried to SEE the house and was told by the realtor that he didn't have keys and the owners were away on vacation (which of course was not true). It turns out the realtor wanted to buy the house and then re-sell for much more than was originally offered. To be honest I don't know how really true these stories are, but it would be a real shame if they were true, wouldn't it?
And anyway, who has that kind of money these days? Take care. |

JoAnne, that was Columbia Heights on Columbia St, right? The rents and the houses are being sold and rented for prices that are crazy but they get it and not from the old timers or the people who grew up in the neighborhood. The people from Manhattan who can't afford the City come here, offer money and it's snatched up pushing us all out. It is a shame isn't it? A house here in Red Hook was for sale, 399,000 my son went to look at it and said it wasn't worth it with all the fixing up it needed. Another RealEstate took it to sell and the price is now 699,000. Are they sick or what? Just to live in Red Hook? I was born and raised here as a lot of the people who post here were. What is with Red Hook all of a sudden? And Smith St? And Columbia St? We just didn't appreciate it when we had it. Yes it is sick!!! Change is nice but give us a break. Oh and before I forget a house on Degraw St was just sold for 950,000. HELLO!!!! Louise |

Did I read wrong in the Daily News that there is a house on Columbia Street up for sale for $20 Million??? This is probably why people who grew up there can't afford to live there. It is very sad. |

My thanks to Lucy and Howie for the info on the people from the Hook that I inquired about recently. I was sorry to hear that a few of them have died. By the way Lucy I found out that Delores Gilbert also passed away. And Howie, my wife Liz nee Raichle, sister of Tillie Dellaporte says hello. When we lived on Coffey St. we were around the corner from your wonderful mother.
I have another question that perhaps someone can help me with. Any news on sisters Millie and Alvina Hojnaki who lived on Coffey St.?
Thanks again. Red Hook forever. |

Hi Marie,
I see your entry on March 9th. I have been trying to email you but you must have changed your address. We were always in touch with jokes and things and now it seems I am either blocked or you changed the name again. Hope to talk to you soon. How's Larry and most of all that adorable grandson of yours.
