The
South Brooklyn
Network

Why is it called South Brooklyn?

The communities of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, and Park Slope comprised the southern portion of the village of Breukelen - one of the six original Dutch villages that are now the borough of Brooklyn.

Go for a journey through our neighborhoods. Learn some of the history, meet the real people who live here, and learn about the hidden treasures within the brownstone neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

Joe, No offense taken. After all information is what I seek. However the old newspaper clipping locates 401 between 7th & 8th ave. The picture matches photos in my grandmothers album. I also have a telegram dated 1927 addressed to my mother at 401 17th. Prehaps the city has reconfigure the addresses. Thanks for your help. Ken

Hi:
I lived in red hook on visitation Place. I loved the neighborhood..In my time it was very safe, very family.. I remember Father Maroney..whenever he came down our block we would sit on the stoop very quitely.
He kind of scared us. My mom passed away 6 years ago. My brother Ronald Gallo passed away 7 years ago and I'm sure everyone knew Johnny boy, he also passed away about 6 years ago. But the majority of my family had a wonderful life in red hook...My sisters Helvi & Elaine..Helvi still lives in red hook...My sister Michele (the baby sister) lives in Staten Island.. We all have children & grandchildren.

Well that's all for now...

Hello Louise,
My name is Alice Lopez, (mother's maiden name is Goitia)I was born and raised in Bklyn.Born at the Long Island College Hospital, (a long time ago) 1938, lived at 69 Columbia Street until I married.(Anthony Silva(Sonny)Divorced 10 years later.) Had 2 beautiful son's (Anthony) (Steven)
Went to P.S. 29, and Sarah J. Hale High School. I have cousins,(Goitia's) but sorry to say don't know where they are. When I married in 56, and moved out of Columbia St, we all seem to loose touch. My mom's name was Amparo, my dad Juan, my brother John, and my sister was Janet. I worked at the Telephone Co. on Bridge and Willoughby St, for 15 years and resigned in 1970, to care for my moms in Puerto Rico, and I'm still here.
So I might be related to the Goitia you mentioned, there weren't many around.
Take care Alice
