For John Burkard: I remember playing around the "doughboy" statue in Coffey Park when I was about 5 years old (c. 1928). We children thought a soldier was buried there and we didn't dare go to close for fear of treading on his grave. (How many of today's children have reverence for anything!) |

For John Burkard: Thank you, so much, for your prompt reply. No, Tom was drafted shortly after our child was born. He was 19 years old and not a member of any post. I've had his name added to the rolls at the new World War Two memorial in Washington D.C. It would be nice if his were to be included in a Red Hook memorial, since he grew up there. There were 14 children in his family, but none remain in that area. |

For Mollie Fiore Howard- The Red Hook memorial post 5195 on VanBrunt St in Red Hook has a memorial in front of their building. The statue is an old Johhnie Doughboy Statue relocated in the 70s at post expense because of excessive vandalism upon it in the old location in Coffey Park. That memorial is WW1 area deceased veterans. They also have WW2 and Vietnam memorial plaques, but they may be just for those veterans who were members of the post. neighborhood members who served during a conflict were granted automatic membership as long as they served. If you came from the area, check with the post to see if your husband was a memebr at the time of his demise. If he was, I'm sure you can arrange with post officials of your desire to donate a name plaque in his honor, and have it mounted there. You would have to check with the Commander or Quartermaster first to be sure of the right way to go about it. |

Just read an article about citizen-created memorials built to honor Americans killed at war. Made me wonder, has anyone in Brooklyn built such a memorial for its residents who were killed in World War Two? My sweet 21-year-old husband was killed at Anzio May 23, 1944. |

I have to piggyback on Larry's statemnt and give big time plaudits to Anthony C., Johnny P. & Nancy C. for a superb job. There were some people that I hadn't seen since the late 60's. Thanks to all of you for making it happen.
Hi Ed Murphy. The website I told your sisters about is administered by my cousins Veronica (Fagan)and Mary. It's a McMahon family website and is maintained on MyFamily.com. Send me a email at skullman1 [at] suscom.net and I'll forward it to Veronica. She'll have to assign you a "user name and password" in order to access the website. If I'm correct Ed, Frank & Joe Murphy were the brothers of the Murphy sisters that were married to my Uncle Red & my Uncle Joe. So my first cousins from these marriages are also yr first cousins. I think that makes us second cousins. Nothing like "going down the Hook" and coming back with a bunch of new cousins. Once my cousin Veronica contacts you you'll have to go through all the pictures but if you focus on the one's with Aunt Gerry and Aunt Loretta you'll see pictures of either your dad or yr uncles. Good meeting you cuz |
