For Tom Petrovato, About your post about the real? Red Hook, You should be aware that your South Brooklyn area was also called Red Hook at one time. I have photos c1912 of homes in Cobble Hill (373 Clinton) and Carrol Gardens (25 First Place) they were labeled "Red Hook Mansions" The new neighborhood names sprang up well after the construction of the low rental housing project. And even later when the Gowanus Expressway cut the nabe in half. But a different name does not make an area good or bad, it all depends on the people residing there. During my 75 years in Red Hook, I have met many great people from Red Hook, as well as from Carrol Gardens, and Cobble Hill, and needless to say I also met some who were not so great. Your alluding to a neighborhood being real because of a name is uncanny and bordering on absurd..... |

Does anyone know if there was a Mikes Meat Market that used to be on 5th Ave? I could be wrong about 5th Ave. He was an Italian man. I think he moved away around 76, 77 or 78. Any Information would be greatly appreciated. Tnank You |

Hello all.
My father and his family are old-time Brooklyn folks (Dodger fans to the core, obviously). I'd appreciate and love to hear from anyone who knew the name "Kenneke". My father is now researching his background and although he's lived in the D.C. area for more than 40 years, he's never "left" Brooklyn.
Thanks in advance for ANY info.

For Mollie Howard, c1928? Mollie dear, your revealing your age. Alas, the Roddy Kenneke you speak of, passed from this life some 30 or so years ago. I was 5 years old an lived at 113 Bush Street when you were dancing around the maypole, do you recall, the tenement's were only on one side of Bush Street? the other side was empty lots, and once part of the infamous Hoover City. Also the Ramsey family, Mrs Ramsey, (Delly) and John her husband resided on Bush St. I don't think they had married yet. I'm afraid Mollie there's only a few of us left to recall those memories. Mrs Derbyshire I think, used to shout out the window "here comes Edison" and the tenants would run down their cellers and remove the jumpers from the electric meters. What was the name of the only grocery store on Bush Street? and down the block I remember another one, corner of Clinton St, and a barber shop next door. I used to hate the barber shop, I had to sit in one of those high chair type seats and always cried. Do you recall the dept of Sanitation DSC in those days would hook up a huge portable shower to the johnnie pump for the kids on those steamy hot summer days? no swimming pools, no open hydrants, we had to run on the hot pavement with bare feet to get to the showere and cool off. |

Is Roddie Kenneke still alive and kicking in Red Hook? He and I were King and Queen of the May c.1928. We led the parade from 119 Bush St. to Coffey Park and danced around the May Pole. Seems like yesterday. |

For Joe Buonocore- The Accocella family, and I believe also Marie reside in Staten Island. She did have a Brother Michael, They are my wifes cousins on her Mothers side. If you rememer the barber shop on Wolcott street opposite the what is now PS 15,Their Father operated out of that shop and that house was also their home in Red Hook. They were a wonderful active family, but alas like all who move away we lose contact with them. When you said Grogans, you really jarred my memory, and caused a trip down memory lane... |
