Why is it called South Brooklyn?

The communities of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, and Park Slope comprised the southern portion of the village of Breukelen - one of the six original Dutch villages that are now the borough of Brooklyn.

Go for a journey through our neighborhoods. Learn some of the history, meet the real people who live here, and learn about the hidden treasures within the brownstone neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

I check this site everyday for my husband who lived in Red Hook. Likes to read the mail. Has been lucky seeing old friends on the site. He will be 75 on 7/30. Seems the older he gets the more he talks about Red Hook. Sat we are getting to go to a shower with family & friends & I know that it will turn to talk about the Good Old Days. Many fond memories from thier youth. All went to St. Mary Star of the Sea as kids. I always look forward to seeing them as I know I will have a great time listening to thier stories. I have my own memories of Bay Ridge where i grew up. Live in S.I. now but you would be supprised how many people I have met came from Red Hook. Just met a gal & we talked about Unio street & pannelle sanwiches with potato. Delfines came up too. She was supprised I knew so much about area since I didnt come from there. Once I explained that my husband was born & raised in Redhook & that I was married in St Agnes (with permission from OLPH)she understood. We talked for about an hour. Told her about the many changes. Now she wants to take a trip back one sat & see if any of her old friends are still living there. I also told her about this site since she didnt know it existed. I hope she connects with some here.

It's always fun for me to read over the notes. I grew up on Sackett Street between Smith and Hoyt. St. Agnes was my parrish. My dad and all his brothers were longshoreman. I remember going to Columbia St. to get Parnel sandwiches. I played at Carrol park. I feel so bless to have had such a great childhood in Brooklyn. My whole family lived in one brownstone and all my relatives lived in the neighborhood. My cousins still live on Degraw Street. I live in Florida now, but am always happy to tell people I grew up in South Brooklyn. I was shocked to read that Court Pastry is gone. I am going to NY this weekend and my Mom will be said to here she lives in Rockland. Does anyone remember Charlie Garbelotto? My dad who is not gone 9 years.......

My Dad, Tony, died about 38 years ago. My mom, Lena died about 16 years ago. Sorry to say I don't know exactly when the Pizzeria burned down. The whole building is gone now. I was down to Red Hook 2 weeks ago and was quite surprised at the changes. The Park down at the dock is quite beautiful. I used to work at the Todd Shipyard Office and also I worked for Keystone Paint till I moved to Wantagh, Long Island in 1959. But my sisters lived in Red Hook for quite a few years after that. We are all out on the Island and Lenore lives in New Jersey. Thanks for remembering.

Rosemarie, of course we remember Tony's Pizza since it was a staple in Red Hook.
I recall going there many times and we always enjoyed the pizza and I especially liked the meatballs. We always got a kick out of Tony when he opened his little pocketbook (my grandfather had one too) and when Lena greeted us with a big smile.
Perhaps you can tell us when they passed away and when the store closed up, which was a sad day for the Hook.
It's nice having you join us on this terrific site.

To Tony "G" -- I grew up on Warren between Smith and Court from my birth in 1952 till I left in 1975. I also remember the street games and using the sewers as bases for punchball.
What address did you live at? I was at 263 Warren St., right about in the middle of the block. Who did you hang out with from Warren St.? I'm sure we knew a few people in common. Remember the Betancourts? The Rondons? The Walshes? The Kearneys? The Gonzalezes? Did you go to St. Pauls?
Let me know.
Regards,
Tom Kennedy

My next question is if you answered yes both times...Did you & your brother go up to Columbia St. to "take care of the big Italian teacher that liked all young boys? LOL! I cannot remeber her name ...but I wouldent use it anyhow because she probley has many people that would remeber her, but not necisarily her name! that would be around 1962-63 ...
