Why is it called South Brooklyn?

The communities of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, and Park Slope comprised the southern portion of the village of Breukelen - one of the six original Dutch villages that are now the borough of Brooklyn.

Go for a journey through our neighborhoods. Learn some of the history, meet the real people who live here, and learn about the hidden treasures within the brownstone neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

I have asked numerous times for you to stop with the comic book character stuff. If you want to play games, do it via email and not on the guestbook. I spend enough time taking out the spammers without you guys abusing the system as well. Have some respect before I take this guestbook down.

Another note of interest about Coffey Park. The park was never officially named Coffey Park by the City Parks Dept. Mr. Coffey an Alderman in Brooklyn had fought very hard to have a park placed in Red Hook. The park original name of Red Hook Park. Alderman Coffey was fighting with the City and resigned by the time of the park had it’s dedication. Mr. Coffey was not even present on the day of dedication. The people of Red Hook always refer to the park as Coffey Park. The name just stuck and the park is officially today is known as Coffey Park. I don’t think you will find any official dedication ever naming the park Coffey park

Hello Billy Donahue, long time no see, how is the world treating you? I run into your Mom and Pop occasionaly, when they come up from Florida. You wouldn't believe what your old home sold for a while back, prices are soaring out of this world in Red Hook. To add to your research on Coffey Street, I just want to say that the street name was changed from Partition St on Nov 30, 1891, and yes indeed it was named after Michael J. Coffey who was also the leader of what was called at that time the Common Council. He also attended school in Red Hook, but I find no listing of the name of the school. Coffey St also began at Columbia St running to the East River but in 1848 the section from Columbia to Otsego was closed and it extended from Otsego st to the river as we know it today. drop this old man an email and say hello, it will be nice to hear from you. John Sr.
