The
South Brooklyn
Network

Why is it called South Brooklyn?

The communities of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, and Park Slope comprised the southern portion of the village of Breukelen - one of the six original Dutch villages that are now the borough of Brooklyn.

Go for a journey through our neighborhoods. Learn some of the history, meet the real people who live here, and learn about the hidden treasures within the brownstone neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

Hey Shadow, am I wrong in thinking that I can remember a "Bare A** Beach" on the Hamilton Avenue side of the Grain Elevator. Barges would be tied up there. I remember a fellow named Hoffman, who I believe lived on one of the barges, who went to Saint Mary's school. I believe the area was filled in and became part of a soccer field.

To all the Red HOOkers past and present...
I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Labor day.
I am very proud to have come from Red Hook. Very hard working and proud people.. I visit the V.F.W. POst on Van Brunt street very often, and I have seen the wonderful plaques dedicated to the Proud Americans that fought for us . My dad, Jackie Dell and my Uncle Louie are just two of the People that have a plaque on the wall next to the Dough Boy. Mr. Nelson is there, Amandolas, and several other very proud Red Hookers. Have a wonderful and safe week end, thank you all for making Red HOOk a great plave to live.

Sincerely Peggy Della Porte

After 15 Spams, Can't wait for the "what a cool site you have". Red Hooks' people were the best of workers. The docks, Tickles, D&K, Employed many. Without A.C & T.V., the hopefully quick stop at the bar, provided some laughs, & liquids. I'll never forget my father coming home after a hot day at the Grain elevator. The grain odor was 15' around him. The grain dust covered every inch, & it was distressing to see his nostrils caked with dust. He was totally soaked with sweat, & I was in awe that he could endure this horrible work in the bowels of a grain ship. I salute all the workers, especially those of Red Hook.

Hi! People! Especiallly Red Hookers!Happy Labor Day Week end! Anyone out there that remembers Macho Bravo Aka Jose O Bravo... He sends reguards! I spent the day with him today ! He did two tours in Nam and has bullets lodged in his head! Has seizures hears a constant buzzing in his head, cant rember what happend five minutes ago and is legally blind BUT he smiles he sings with the oldies he remonieses with me and Cheno about the old RED HOOK we all grew up in... He smiles when he speaks about his child bride (wife # 1) Maureen Boyle and bows his head when he remembers how terrible he treated her and his voice trails off when he speaks of his first son Joseph that he has not seen since he was a baby! He never speaks ill of anyone never complains about his condition never speaks of the so called war, that really was one but no one called it that then! He speaks of the crosstown diner ,the post, coffee park, stadium,Saboo Eddie Perez!(passed)Sammy Morano,Johnny Lopez,Ko Ko and Tuti,Long John (passed) Bulldog (Able Bracero) Sharion Plunkett Bracero,(passed) We lisen to Lantino music ,from back in the day Joe Cuba! Eddie Patone...We listen and sing to the oldies ... I hear him speak on the phone that I let him use to call old friends cause its a cell phone and it dont cost nothing its saturday! And he needs someone to dial cause he cant see... I hear him say to each friend you need something you call me...I'll help you! You need a few bucks I ll help ya! How much do you need! Yes he was a son of a gun tough guy back in the day but he loves his woods and all his children, and all his friends and he always says he wishes he could go back to undo his mistakes that hes made! >And he wants me to say to the first Love of his life Maureen to please forgive him as he bows his head in shame! I pray that you do forgive him! I pray for all of you that hurt ,that have no one, that have gone thru wars and still suffer today! I thank you all that have in someway sacrificed for me!and this country! God Bless you ...And God Bless our country all the people in it! and my Blessings go to all the devestated places in this world! Lucy

Ahoy,ye Landlubbers! Just visted Red Hook, using the Water Taxi. 100's of containers by B'kln Heights, then the huge container derricks along Columbia St. By the tunnel, well into the Hook, is the new facility for cruise ships. Then come the unused brick warehouses. The boat stops next to the old,(looks new)Sucrest Sugar factory.A few blocks away is a unused Casino gambling ship. Lots of waterfront ready for some purpose.

Hi Louise

Thanks for your response. I rec'd an email from Mark saying he was on vacation. He said he was at the Grand Canyon. He said he did not have access to the internet. I understood from his message that he is back now. Patience...your'e right. I guess my posting was critical and strong, but it's frustrating that such a nice site can be tarnished by such jerks and they continue to do so each day.
Louise...where are you from?
I have tons of family in NY now. I have family in Red Hook, on Court Street by St. Mary's Church. I live in Florida, Orlando but left my heart in NY.
Have a great holiday weekend and pray for all those suffering with Harricane Katrina.

Pleae don't judge the small food purchaser too harshly. As a person who has been preparing meals for myself alone for years, I can understand the one who buys one banana and a couple of slices of meat. If one is a small eater, food just doesn't keep that well for long, especially bananas!

Everyday I turn on my computer and find someone in some foreign country that wants me to help him recover millions of dollars out of a bank account. This is a computer-generated message that goes to thousands of e-mail addresses. I may be wrong but I think these messages to the SBN site may also be computer generated to many sites and not just some knuckleheads only posting on the SBN. If this is the case. The way to get around this problem may be some kind of sign into the SBN.

for the guy that's trying to pedal vicoden and other illegal drugs on this site. The owner and creator of this great website is threatening to take it down. Your foolish advertisements will only succeed in destroying a wonderful place where people can meet old friends and talk about their experiences from different times in differnt parts of South Brooklyn. If he does, what the hell did you accomplish? Your obviously a business man, but you should also realize how fruitless your posts are, no one using the guest book is interested in what you have to sell. Why dont you pack up your suit case and go someplace else? I reluctantly post this message because I simply cannot believe your so stupid, that you do not understand this advice.....
